The approach to Western philosophy constitutes one of the defining phenomena of 20th century Iranian intellectual history. The underlying interest was not only scholarly, but designed to understand both 'the West' and Iran's own sociocultural situation. This thesis deals with the perception of 'the West' through philosophy by Moḥammad Ḥoseyn Ṭabāṭabāʾī and Mortażā Moṭahharī, two leading Iranian religious scholars who contributed their share to the image of 'the West' in Iran and to shaping the course of its intellectual history.
