In the Middle Ages and Renaissance carnival was customarily the period of different kinds of revelries, popular folk traditions and profane spectacles. Exuberant carnival activities often ended up in violations of limits, endangering law and order. Authorities therefore tried to channel and control the festivity. Their difficult struggle against the negative effects of overindulgence of worldly pleasures can be observed very closely in the case of Lucerne, a stronghold of carnival and theatre since the late Middle Ages. The staging of Renward Cysats carnival play "Convivii Process" provided an excellent vehicle for conveying the message of the secular and religious leaders of the catholic reform: Those who are unwilling to renounce carnival customs will bear terrible consequences in the afterlife.
