Based on findings on the relationship between self-esteem, self-efficacy, anxiety and addictions, we aimed to investigate the influence of therapeutic climbing on the above factors in patients with alcohol dependence during inpatient-treatment program. Of the 106 subjects, 66 attended the additional therapeutic climbing. The target variables anxiety, self-esteem and self-efficacy were measured at entry of the therapeutic climbing and 6 weeks after. All patients show a significant increase in self-esteem and self-efficacy while a decrease in anxiety symptoms was recorded. Patients with additional clinically relevant anxiety symptoms who attended the therapeutic climbing tend to have the largest increase in self-esteem and a greater decrease in anxiety symptoms. Therapeutic climbing seems to be an effective treatment approach particularly indicated for alcohol-dependent patients with additional symptoms of anxiety.
