This article explores the phenomenon of food donation to Nicaragua between 1960 and 1990. Through this focus, the construction of political power in the Central American country is analyzed across an era of significant change, from the height of the Somoza dictatorship through the Sandinista regime. An exploration of the complex map of actors, concepts and projects, which relied both explicitly and implicitly on certain ideas of development, reveals how food donation served as a battlefield for the prevailing geopolitical and ideological conflict in the Cold War.
