This paper considers the synthesis of sociological systems theory and the ‘culturalist’ (“kulturwissenschaftlich”) approach of religious studies. It advocates the use of the under utilized potential of systems theory for the overall task of religious studies: a theory of religion. In doing so, the paper presents the programmatic work of Burkhard Gladigow, representing the ‘culturalist’ approach, and Luhmann’s theory of religion as communication system. The systems theoretical considerations of religion as communication offer an approach, which complements and extents the ‘culturalist’ perspective. Thereby, the paper shows the inherent compatibility of the comparative method with the ‘culturalist’ approach as well as with the functional analysis of systems theory and the theory of social evolution. Finally, the integrative synthesis of a systemic-‘culturalist’ study of religion provides greater connectivity to other disciplines’ research perspectives and results; therefore, it enables new and more complex possibilities for disciplinary and interdisciplinary study of religion.
