What kind of questions would practitioners raise? A survey of practicing therapists' research needs and benefits

Rohde, Kristina Barbara; Caspar, Franz (27 June 2014). What kind of questions would practitioners raise? A survey of practicing therapists' research needs and benefits (Unpublished). In: 45th International Annual Meeting of the Society for Psychotherapy Research. Kopenhagen, Dänemark. 25.-28. Juni 2014.

Numerous papers have pointed to the gap between psychotherapy research and clinical practice. Awareness of this gap has led to the development and implementation of new research approaches including e.g. the combination of qualitative and quantitative research or case study reports. Hence, efforts aiming at bridging the gap between research and clinical practice mainly consist of adapting research methods to practitioners' needs. However, less explicit attention is paid to the adaption of research topics. While researchers seem implicitly to assume that their research topics are influential and relevant for clinical practice, explicit knowledge of which research topics practitioners actually value as important is scarce. In this telephone survey, 81 practicing therapists were asked to which extent they were interested in, satisfied with, and influenced by psychotherapy research. Additionally, they were explicitly asked to specify research topics they consider important for their clinical practice. Furthermore, the study explored which past research results actually influenced the practitioners' work. Implications of these findings are discussed with respect to existing findings from past surveys of practitioners and current directions in psychotherapy research.
