Er3þ for 980nmexcitationandenergytransferupconversion(ETU)in β-NaYF4: 20%Er3þ for 1523nm
excitation.Thecrucialimportanceofresonanceisdemonstratedforone-andtwo-colorexcitationsin
LaCl3:Er.ForESAtheexcitationspectraareconvolutionsoftheindividualexcitationstepsandtheUC
luminescence intensityshowsalineardependenceontheexcitationpowerforeachstep.Forone-color
excitedESAandETUinthelowpowerlimit,theexponentofthepowerdependenceisequaltothe
number ofexcitationsteps.Theexponentisreducedduetosaturationeffectsforhighpowerexcitation.
The ETUexcitationspectraresemblethegroundstateabsorptionasshownfor β-NaYF4:Er.Uponbroad-
band excitationbysub-Si-band-gapinfraredlight β-NaYF4:Er showsUCluminescencemainlyfromthe
4I11/2 state around980nmwhichefficiently excitesaSisolarcell.ThisErUCluminescenceistwoorders
of magnitudemoreintensethanthatofotherrareearthionsunderthesameexperimentalconditions.
