After the national elections held in October 2015, the year 2016 represented the beginning of a new legislature. The political discourse was largely shaped by direct democratic decisions. Most notably, the popular initiative ‘For the enforcement of the deportation of foreign criminals’ generated intense debate and mobilisation, resulting in the highest turnout rate in over 20 years.
