A complete critical edition of Giacomo Leopardi’s poetical translations is a philological task still to be carried out. The essay aims to contribute to the preparatory works to this edition and it examines the philological problems implied by a specific case: the translation of the pseudo-homeric "Batracomiomachia" and
its paratext, the preliminary "Discorso." The manuscript and print traditions of the "Discorso" and of the three versions of Leopardi’s translation are being re-examined with attention, inter alia, to a manuscript witness which so far had not been considered by scholars and philologists. This is an autograph of the "Discorso" and of the first version of "La guerra dei topi e delle rane" (1815) which is preserved in Switzerland at the Fondation Martin Bodmer (Cologny/Genève). Examining the traditions leads, among others, to the identification of some errors whichhave been made in 19th and 20th century editions of Leopardi’s "Discorso" and which should not be replicated by future editors.
