The bulrush is well adapted to the flooding of the roots and rhizomes. The oxygen transport into the submerged organs allows an optimal energy production from the reserves practically all year round, since the submerged organs also have connections to the outside air via stalks during the winter. Extreme situations can be mastered thanks to metabolic-physiological adaptations.
