Addition of the amino acids ornithine, citrulline or arginine to a complete nutrient solution with nitrate or ammonium as inorganic nitrogen source caused different reactions in Lemna. Growth was more inhibited by ornithine and arginine than by citrulline. Growth in presence of nitrate was more reduced than with ammonium. The addition of glucose reduced the growth inhibition on both inorganic nitrogen sources. The effect of ornithine and arginine seems to be due, at least partially, to different mechanisms, because comparable cultures showed morphological differencies. The fronds were bigger in the cultures with arginine. When these cultures did no longer grow exponentially, big misshapen fronds were formed. These fronds remained connected with the maternal frond for a long time by means of a threadlike structure and it was no longer possible to observe the typical formation of daughter fronds.
