This article examines young people’s transition pathways from education to employment in Germany and Switzerland. For many adolescents vocational education and training is the major path to access the labor market. There are considerable barriers to labor market integration for lower educated adolescents who have not completed some form of vocational education. We use data from the German DJI Transition Panel and the Swiss Transition from Education to Employment project (TREE) to analyze the situation of adolescents from schools with basic intellectual requirements six years after compulsory schooling. In both countries, only some of these adolescents reach the second threshold. Whereas transition patterns in Switzerland seem to be rather structured, transition patterns in Germany are more heterogeneous; this is likely to involve opportunities and risks at the same time. By analyzing gender, migration background, social status of parents, educational attainment, and the regional labor market situation, we are able to show the influence of a set of individual, social, and structural factors on the transition pathways of adolescents.
