The Swiss Library of Eastern Europe – Schweizerische Osteuropabibliothek (SOB) - is the largest library on the history of Eastern Europe in Switzerland. The library was created simultaneously with the East European Institute in 1959 in Bern. The founder of both institutions and temporary head of the library was Peter Sager (1925-2006), doctor of political science, Swiss politician, leader, organizer, sovietologist, and bibliophile. For more than half a century, since 1948, Dr. Sager collected Western European books, maps and autographs relating to Russia and Eastern Europe. In 2005, the collection was purchased by the Swiss Eastern European Library and became an independent foundation, the «Rossica Europeana.» The name of Peter Sager is also associated with a collection of Russian books of the L.N. Tolstoy society from the sanatorium for lung diseases in the town of Davos. This collection of Russian books was transported from Davos to Bern by order of Peter Sager in the early 60s. Today it constitutes the independent collection «Russian books from Davos.» The collection is almost intact in its entirety and contains original publications of books and periodicals of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
