The German-speaking part of Switzerland has been a popular destination during the massive Italian immigration of the 1960s and 1970s. After the economic crisis in 2008, Switzerland is again an important protagonist within the new Italian immigration wave called “neo-migrazione”. Yesterday, as today, German-speaking Switzerland represents a linguistic challenge for immigrants. The multilingual context, characterized above all by the simultaneous presence of standard German and local dialects, requires the acquisition of two languages to be able to interact without limits with members of the local community and local institutions.
Compared to the previous immigration wave, about 30% of the new immigrants have a high level of education and are often – but not always – hired by universities, research centres or work as engineers with higher management positions. In our paper, we will compare the experiences of exponents of the “old migration” with the experiences of those who arrived recently with a special glance at very high educated immigrants. On the basis of qualitative analysis of interviews collected in 2018, we will pay particular attention to the architecture of the social networks and to the linguistic uses within the networks (see Natale, Krakenberger 2017; Bianco, Krakenberger, Natale 2017).
