History of Universities: Remarks on the State of the Art and Recent Research Trends
(Focused on German-Speaking Lands)
This paper delivers an overview on (German-language) university historiography, beginning
with Rüegg’s Geschichte der Universität in Europa and considering the relevant
types of sources. Rüegg additionally traces the establishment and professionalization of
university historiography within the general study of history. Moreover, the interrelations
of university history on the one hand and the history of societies on the other hand will be
analyzed. The core structure of the paper is devoted to the definition of four main research
areas of the modern, contemporary history of universities which may help understand the
concept ›university‹ and its interactions with society : the structural historyof universities,
the staff and status history including the histories of knowledge and science, the history of
the students, as well as the history of self-presentation (communication).
