The present study was prompted by the different accounts that the German press gave of the events surrounding the referendum called by the autonomous government of Catalonia on 1 October 2017 to decide on the possibility of independence from the Spanish state. The main objective of the work consists in the description of a selection of conceptual frames through which this perspectivization is carried out in the journalistic discourse. The research approach is quantitative and consists of a corpus based analysis of journalistic on-line articles extracted from the German press. It aims to achieve a blended reading of the data, for which the quantitative and qualitative approaches complement each other and alternate throughout the research. The analysis results in the identification of two discursive poles and five conceptual sub-frames that suggest a different perspective of the archi-frame labelled "geopolitical separation". Each sub-frame seems to evoke a different ideological positioning that does not always coincide with the ideological orientation of the newspaper in which it appears. To conclude, hypotheses are also developed that point to future lines of research, such as the role played by the translation of news taken from local agencies (in this case, mainly Spanish) for articles in the international press or the relevance of the reported speech in the news for the understanding of the conceptual frames used in the articles and their underlying ideologies.
