The present study illustrates how staff members (N = 1667) and inmates (N = 381) evaluate the social climate within Swiss penal institutions. The social climate was measured using EssenCES (Schalast & Groenewald 2009) and showed that, based on the 5-point response scale, all surveyed groups evaluate the social climate to be slightly below or above the scale mean. Additionally, differences between the two groups were observable and further, based on a correlation analysis, individual characteristics correlate with their assessment of the social climate.
