Portmann, Alexandra (2022). Shakespeare's Globe in Indija - a portrait of Itaka Shakespeare Festival (Serbia). In: Shakespeare on European Festival Stages (213 -229). The Arden Shakespeare
Full text not available from this repository. After the overwhelmingly celebrated Globe to Globe festival in London (2012), in which all of Shakespeare’s plays have been staged in different languages, the Serbian National Theatre was commissioned to stage Part 1 of Henry VI, which was followed by Part 2 and 3 staged by the National Theatre in Albania and the Macedonian National Theatre in Bitola respectively. Bearing in mind that this play was not a stable part of the theatrical repertoire in this particular cultural context, no modern translation or staging tradition had existed. Therefore, the play had to be translated anew and to be adapted for a festival context. This particular series of performances of Henry VI in London, which were also labelled by reviewers as “Balkan Trilogy”, had a crucial effect on performing Shakespeare in the region of south eastern Europe: Nikita Milivojević, who directed Henry VI Part 1 initiated the first regular international Shakespeare Festival in Serbia in 2014, called Itaka Shakespeare Festival.
This portrait of the festival is based on extended interviews with Milivojević as its artistic director, and the translator of Henry VI Part 1, Professor Zoran Paunović from the University of Belgrade. This chapter not only addresses the relationship between the Globe to Globe and the Itaka Shakespeare Festival, but aims to locate the festival within a larger context of performing Shakespeare in Serbia and its vivid theatre festival landscape.
