Disruptive applications for mobile devices have beenproposed that can be enhanced by edge computing facilities. Inthis context, Fog Computing and Multi-access Edge Comput-ing (FMEC) are proposed architectures to meet the mobilityrequirements imposed by these applications in a wide rangeof domains, such as the Internet of Things, Immersive Media,and Self-driving Vehicles. These architectures aim to introducecomputing capabilities in the path between the user and theCloud to execute tasks closer to where they are consumed,thus mitigating issues related to latency, context awareness,and mobility support. In this survey, we describe which arethe leading technologies to support the deployment of FMECinfrastructure. After that, we discuss the applications that cantake advantage of FMEC and how they were proposed in theliterature. After examining enabling technologies and relatedapplications, we identify some open challenges to fully achievethe potential of FMEC, and also research opportunities onupcoming paradigms for service provisioning. This survey is aguide to comprehend the recent advances on the provisioning ofmobile applications, as well as foresee the expected next stagesof evolution for these applications.
