Between Craft and Genius: Towards a Relationship between Individual Creation and Collective Pro-duction in Music since the 18th Century

Wegner, Sascha (13 November 2020). Between Craft and Genius: Towards a Relationship between Individual Creation and Collective Pro-duction in Music since the 18th Century (Unpublished). In: Internationale Tagung: Ästhetik(en) pluraler Autorschaft: Literatur – Kunst – Musik. Eberhard Karls Universität, Tübingen. 12.–14. November 2020.

From a music-historical perspective, the phenomenon of the division of labour in the production of musical works (such as compositions) and the resulting complexity of authorship may be regarded as a substantial problem rooted in the art form of music itself. Music, as early as at the point of its crea-tion, but also once it has been created, does not float in a vacuum. Rather, beyond a composing sub-ject, it requires more and more ‘players’ to bring music into aesthetic presence. The question of musi-cal authorship is thus a question of the relationship between composer and works, musicians, arrang-ers, librettists and even agents in the publishing industry. For example: What degree of authorship do Joseph Eybler and Franz Xaver Süssmayr have in the completion of Mozart’s Requiem? How are the massive interventions by the publisher in the musical text of Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony to be assessed, for example in the movement titles, especially whenever they deviate from the composers’ explicit will, but still have a life of their own in terms of a sustainable reception history? Why does Mozart’s arrangement of Handel’s Messiah appear as a separate work in his catalogue raisonné, but not Mendelssohn Bartholdy's arrangement of Bach’s St Matthew Passion, which was elaborated on in comparable conditions? The paper aims to discuss the complex relationship between the various play-ers in music history since the 18th century by means of representative examples.
