The different meanings that the notion of authenticity, even within the quite specific field of ontology of music, has gained, both diachronically (in different periods of its history) and synchronically (in different cultural fields), seem to provide a very good example of what Wittgenstein, in a well-known passage of his Philosophical Investigations, called family resemblance. Accordingly, in order to give a reliable account of such a notion, one should not start from the point of trying to provide a definition, but rather to see how it has been used in the respective different contexts. In this paper, I would like on the one side to analyze three established uses of this notion in the literature relating to the ontology of music and ontology of art more generally, and on the other side to discuss and elaborate a fourth recent use of it, which has, in my view, very interesting theoretical ramifications for the notion of authenticity. I will not be discussing the legitimacy of such uses, as this is not the focus of this paper. I will rather try to identify which questions are at stake in each of those different pragmatic contexts.
