The main aim of Marcello Ruta’s contribution consists in proposing the use of the notion of orientation as a hermeneutical tool with which to analyze key aspects of improvisational performances. After an initial investigation of the relationship between these two notions (orientation and improvisation) as articulated in five common symptoms, he essays an application of this approach in the specific domain of free improvisation, the notion of which is also an object of Ruta’s analysis.
