It appears that the area on Axel Heiberg Island in which the profile discussed above was studied has not been inundated by the sea or overrun by glaciers since 2,500 B. C. Between 2,000 and 1,000 B. C., the climate was apparently more favourable for the formation of vegetation than it is at present. This change in climate is not apparent from evidence of more species in the region at that time than there are now, but rather by quantitative changes within the species present on Axel Heiberg Island today.
