The current study presents the developmentand validation of a questionnaire onmotivational competence in exerciseand sport. Motivational competencecharacterises the self-determined abilityto choose a suitable exercise and sportactivity. Knowing one’s own preferencesand what to expect in different activitieshelps people to make this choice, which,in turn, supports them in maintainingtheir physical activity (PA) on a long-termand regular basis. The developed itemscover the following three components ofmotivational competence:1) knowing one’sown preferences, 2) knowing what to expectin different exercise and sport activities, and3) choosing and arranging an exercise andsport activity. Psychometric properties werechecked using a sample withN= 667 adults(Mage= 42.49,SD= 14.71, 62% female). Thefinal one-dimensional scale consists of fouritems. Construct validity showed positiverelationships to intrinsic and identifiedmotivation modes of self-concordance andconversely no relationship to introjectedand low negative to extrinsic motivation. For criterion validity, the structural equationmodeling demonstrated that motivationalcompetenceand PA-specific self-control areindependently and positively associatedwith exercise and sport behaviour.Overall, the newly developed scale isa psychometrically sound and economicalinstrument to be used in exercise and sportpromotion (e.g. counselling) and research.
