This article discusses ways of transcription to be found in two German manuscripts of the 14th century. These two codices are very likely to be the exemplar and its direct copy: Karlsruhe, Badische Landesbibliothek, Donaueschingen 97, and Rome, Biblioteca Casanatense, Ms. 1409. Written before the mid of the 14th century, both manuscripts transmit a merged epic, known as the ‚Rappoltsteiner Parzifal‘ that combines Wolfram von Eschenbach’s ‚Parzival‘ (from 1200/10) with large insertions of originally Old French Grail-narrations. By putting the two textual witnesses alongside each other, scribal interventions occurring in the act of copying can be traced: mis-readings and their corrections, the adaptation of the wording of captions, as well as techniques of abbreviation. After preliminary methodological reflections on the relationship of ,original’ and ,copy’, examples of the mentioned phenomena are presented with respect to a recently published digital edition of both manuscripts, available online: http://www.parzival.unibe.ch/rapp/index.html#/ .
