Fernando Pessoa’s projects testify to his ability and ambition to think about his literary activity in terms of cultural and geographical “intersections”. Having spent his early youth in South Africa, a period punctuated with some long journeys, it was not until he eventually settled in Lisbon that, paradoxically, his notions of movement and cosmopolitanism gained momentum in his work. Since this new focus occurred contemporaneously with his development of the technique of heteronymy and his emphasis upon the new literary emotion of desassossego, the question of the relationship among these elements accordingly arises. For Pessoa, a heteronym could be a valuable and original way to travel by proxy and to test his cosmopolitanism; simultaneously, desassossego could be the key emotion of the traveling heteronym, whether his journey takes place while sailing on a boat (in the case of Álvaro de Campos) or merely sitting in a chair in his home (in the case of Bernardo Soares).
