Background
Histopathological examinations of the ascending aorta finalize the preoperative diagnostic procedure and supply important information on the causes of aortic diseases
Patients and methods
In this clinical pathological study a total of 48 aortic samples from the operative routine of a university hospital were examined.
Results
The samples were from 36 patients (75%) with an ectasia/aneurysma and from 12 patients (25%) with an acute type A aortic dissection. In 18 cases (37.5%) atherosclerotic lesions were found, 14 cases (29.2%) showed diseases of the media, 8 cases (16.6%) presented an inflammatory aortopathy and 1 case (2.1%) a spurious aneurysma. In 7 cases (14.6%) overlapping histopathological pictures were seen.
Conclusion
Microscopic examinations of the ascending aorta are an important cornerstone in quality assurance.
