This chapter presents an overview of LGB rights in the Middle East. It starts with few terminological and analytical remarks, discussing the meaning of the term “Middle East”, which is a relatively modern concept whose meaning has changed over time.
It then focuses on the applicability of the binary heterosexuality/homosexuality, and of the analytical categories LGB when looking at the Middle East, a question that goes back to the widely discussed problem of a constructivist or an essentialist understanding of sexuality.
Then the chapter focuses on three main facets of being LGB in the Middle East, namely:
(i) the criminalization of same-sex acts, which is the dominant legal approach to same-sex acts in the area;
(ii) the lack of protections for LGB people; and
(iii) the strategies of resilience of LGB people notwithstanding the mainstream homophobia.
