Based on the traumatising experience of witnessing a woman’s violent death during my fieldwork, I discuss how “reciprocal vulnerability” challenges the professional image of the privileged researcher, focusing on the intersection of my own vulnerabilities with the suffering of the people I worked with, and the social exchange created therein.
