Motivational aspects, such as motives and goals, are central for initiating and maintaining sport and exercise behaviour. Motives and goals change over the course of life. Therefore, the article deals with the question which motives and goals that are important depending on age. Three age groups are examined: adolescence and young adulthood (n = 870), middle adulthood (n = 448) and late adulthood (n = 399). The data was evaluated descriptively and one-way ANOVAs with post-hoc tests were conducted. The results show that there are both motives and goals that focus on the entire lifespan (e. g. contact) as well as motives and goals that are only relevant for certain age groups. These include risk / challenge in adolescence and young adulthood, as well as everyday competence and cognitive functioning in older adulthood. The importance of individual motives and goals varies over the lifespan. While in the first half of life the focus is more on motives and goals in the context of maximizing profits, e. g. competition / performance and figure / appearance, these motives and goals lose importance in late life.
