The isotope ratios D/H and 18O/16Oexhibit relatively large variations in natural waters. In precipitation one observes

1) a gradual decrease of the heavy isotope concentration when going from lower to higher latitudes, l.e., with decreasing temperature (“temperature effect”; see Fig. 1);
2) a decrease of d18oand dD when going from the coast of a continent inland (“continental effect”);
3) seasonal variations which are approximately parallel to those of temperature (Fig. 2);
4) a lowering of the 180 and D concentrations with increasing altitude (“altitude effect”).
