The method of measuring δ18O in lacustrine carbonate sediments from the European Late and Early! Post-glacial is described: within 20 years of research a typical isotope stratigraphy, such as we consider it characteristical for vast parts of Europe, could be established. Its interpretation and application in the context with other palaeoclimatic investigation methods shows the following features: δ18O in Zone la starts with relatively low values, pointing to low temperatures. Then follows a coherent Late-glacial interval with relatively high temperatures (Firbas zones lb, Ic and II) separated from the early Holocene (zones IV and V) by a relatively cold phase (zone III). The abrupt δ18O-jumps as well as the microvariations within the coherent phases are discussed in terms of time and temperature change.
