During the last decade cyclic variations of the 18O/16O ratio in ocean sediment carbonate have been observed which reflect the fluctuations of the ice cover of the continents. These data lend support to the Milankovitch theory of ice ages which postulates the glacial cycles to be the result of insolation changes due to the variations in the earth's orbital elements. But also the discovery that during the last 160000 years the atmospheric C02 concentration varied in parallel fashion with global climate is of great interest. Based on climate model experiments it seems possible or even probable that the C02 variations essentially caused the coupling between the climatic evolutions in the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere. This finding is especially important, since, due to human activities, the atmospheric concentrations of C02 and other greenhouse gases are significantly increasing. General Circulation Models developed to predict future climate due to the greenhouse warming, when tuned to the boundary conditions 18000 years before now (continental ice cover, insolation land albedo, reduced atmospheric C02) produce a surface temperature distribution close to that reconstructed from indirect information.
