Approximately three decades ago in Switzerland, specifically Platzspitz Park known as the “needle park,” in Zurich, was an open area for drug use and injection of drug. As a social and health consequences of this, Switzerland was exposed to a fast-growing drug-related HIV epidemic. By this time, amongst the European countries Switzerland the highest HIV prevalence observed.
Whereas the many other European countries provide drug-control policies based on policing, Swiss is dealing with drug problem based on public healthy perspective. Whilst no country has been succeeded Swiss has provided evidence for harm reduction in drug-use. Swiss experience, Needle exchange program, may hold lessons for not only EU countries but also the other developing and developed countries. For this purpose, the paper provides general perspective regarding needle exchange program.
