With the arrival of the 13th legion in the years 16/17 AD in Vindonissa (Kt. Aargau, CH), several thousand men were dispatched into a region which up to then had not yet been fully integrated into the Roman empire to establish a legionary fortress. In the subsequent 75 years, the fortress was expanded and modified first by the 21st and then by the 11th legion. In 101 AD, the 11th legion was dispatched by emperor Trajan to fight in the Dacian wars.
Thanks to the very good state of research and knowledge, the site of Vindonissa provides a solid case study for analyzing the chronological development of the cult sites and cults of a Roman legionary fortress and its adjacent civilian settlements.
This paper will not only present these trajectories but also intends to reflect on the changing power networks which may have shaped and influenced them.
