Sport can have both positive and negative effects for people with disabilities, which is particularly evident when focusing on self-concept. The few research findings available on this are partly contradictory. It is unclear whether the self-concept of people with intellectual disabilities (ID) can be measured using established methods and what its expression is. This paper addresses this research desideratum and focuses on the relationship between sport-related leisure activities and sport-related ability self-concept and its importance on the general self-concept. The results of the Swiss National Science Foundation Project Social Participation of Children with Intellectual Disabilities in Inclusive Physical Educationand Sport Clubs (SoPariS) show that the adapted questionnaire scales can reliably measure the self-concept of children with ID. They also show that the surveyed children with ID have a higher general self-concept and a lower sport-related ability self-concept than children without ID and that they are less active in sports. The results also indicate connections between sporting leisure activities and the self-concept.
