This article traces the life of the German theologian, music scholar, liturgist and hymnologist Adolf Thürlings (1844-1915). In 1871 Thürlings was one of the priests “of the first hour” who professed his allegiance to the Old Catholic movement. In the Old Catholic parish of Kempten (Bavaria), his pastoral care and his teaching exemplified at local, grassroots level, the Old Catholic orientation towards the ancient Church. Thürlings received his doctorate in 1877 in Munich with a dissertation on musicology and became the 'creator of the German Old Catholic liturgy' with his Liturgical Prayer Book (1885). He was appointed to the Swiss, (Old Catholic) Catholic Faculty of Theology in 1887, where he taught systematic theology and liturgy, and also played a major role in the liturgical reform of the Swiss Old Catholic Church. His aim was the active participation of the congregation in the liturgy, based on an informed understanding of the faith. In Bern he dedicated himself to the study of musical practice since the Reformation, achieving scholarly recognition beyond his own church.
