Using an experimental design course for industrial design undergraduate students as a case study, this paper explores which new approaches towards design education can be applied to foster a contextually-based practice. Understanding design as a fundamental trait of being human (Heskett, 2002, p.4) and a key factor influencing the quality of life, the authors argue for design education informed by both practical and theoretical research in order to encourage cultural hybridity.
