Determinism is often said to have positive effects on our moral sentiments and with it on our society: It would lead us to feel more sympathy with offenders and to become more modest and even more thankful. In my paper I argue that possible positive effects necessarily correspond with negative impacts: positive moral sentiments like admiration were weakened, a self-excuse of the offender facilitated. There are good reasons to assume that a deterministic dominated society would converge outwardly with a society which believes in freedom. However, at the same time determinism promotes an asymmetric point of view towards other people. Therefore, determinism does not facilitate moral standards but a double standard.
