Exploring Bronze Age land-use dynamics in the Southwest Balkans and Northern Greece

Hostettler, Marco (4 May 2022). Exploring Bronze Age land-use dynamics in the Southwest Balkans and Northern Greece (Unpublished). In: Research seminar in Classical archaeology, University of Uppsala. Uppsala.

Land use can be understood as the interplay between culture and nature and is a central activity for all human societies. The ERC funded Synergy project EXPLO investigates questions relating to the expansion and development of farming and its long-term consequences using a multidisciplinary approach.
The southwestern Balkans are a geographically and culturally diverse and dynamic region throughout prehistory. Located between the Aegean and the Adriatic Sea this diverse landscape ranging from the coast to high mountain lakes connects the Near East to the European mainland. It is a key region for the understanding of the dynamics and causes of land use change throughout prehistory.
The talk will present work in progress of a PhD thesis focusing on Bronze Age land use in the context of environmental and climatic change in Northern Greece. It will also give insights into recent fieldwork in prehistoric waterlogged lake side settlements in the Southern Balkan lakes.
