This chapter investigates whether there are differences in the situation of Russian and Polish in the Ruhr Valley and whether higher values for Russian, as shown by a study of Achterberg (2005) fifteen years earlier, can be replicated. To do so, we adopted the survey developed by Achterberg at that time and analyse the answers of eighty-two Russian and forty-two Polish speakers, given in 2019, focusing on evaluating the respondents’ self-assessed language skills. By comparing the data with the Achterberg Study the results show an increase in self-assessed German language skills and a decline in self-assessed Slavic language skills. The detailed picture on the data for Russian and Polish shows very clear differences between the generations under consideration. Regarding differences between the two languages, the general developments are the same, whereas a detailed picture shows finer differences between the languages. These are particularly evident in the group of Heritage Speakers.
