This chapter explores the development of child psychiatry in die Swiss Canton of Aargau.
It covers the period between the 1930s, when the first polyclinics for adult and minor
patients opened, and the 1980s, when a newly established Service for child and youth
psychiatry found its definite structure. It is argued that the development of child psychiatry
in the Canton of Aargau (as in other regions of Switzerland) was strongly shaped by
the expansion of the welfare state. Welfare schemes such as child protection, juvenile
courts or disability insurance not only entailed a rising demand for psychiatric expertise,
but led, in the long run, also to a considerable rise of awareness and public expenditures
in the field of mental health.
