This article is a first attempt to reflect on whether (and how) early feminist sources could contribute to a better understanding of Egyptian labour history. After a short mapping of the state of the art on the history of gender and labour on the Middle East, and particularly on Egypt, I will focus on Malak Ḥifnī Nāṣif’s life and then specifically on her approach to women’s wage labour, before coming to my conclusions.
