Full text not available from this repository. (Request a copy)This chapter presents an overview of the most relevant aspects related to sexuality in Islamic traditions, looking at how, especially in pre-modern Islamicate societies, different normative systems co-existed beside each other.
Given the existence of different norms, and in order to give a more comprehensive picture of their interrelation, the chapter focused on different discourses on sexuality, specifically lexicography, medicine and Islamic jurisprudence, that played a key role in shaping pre-modern Islamicate cultures. Even if written by scholars of similar background (namely the well-educated urban cosmopolitan elite), these sources still presented different approaches and ideas on sexuality, given the different aims of these genres.
