In order to reach this aim, the chapter first contextualizes Palestinian debates into the Israeli framework, by underlining the role of religious courts and Islamic associations to shape the debate on gender issues among Palestinians, transforming it into an issue of resistance against ‘Israelization’. Then, the chapter discusses the history of Israeli and Palestinian LGBTQ organizations, showing the different approaches they have to religion. The avoidance of debating religious norms among Palestinian organizations is partly the result of the primacy they give to the national struggle over other debates. Yet it can also be explained by the fact that most of their members lack the religious education that would allow them to critically address such issues. Finally, relating the encounter to Palestinian queers, it shows examples of the ways they address religious debates while maintaining their affective bounds to Palestine by focusing on their private relation with God.
