Wisler, Michaela (October 2022). Mongol Zurag, Religion and Women (Unpublished). In: Konferenz: Mongolian Society’s 61st Annual Meeting & Conference. 20.-23.10.2022.

Mongol Zurag is and old and traditional Mongolian painting style which preserves till current days and has many elaborate painters and artists.
In my research I am focusing on contemporary female artists in Mongolia and their relationship and connection to religion, among them also artist of the Mongol Zurag style. Probably the most famous among them is Nomin Bold. Together with her husband Baatarzorig she exhibits her works around the world. Nomin was trained and studied Mongol Zurag at the University of Fine Arts in Ulaanbaatar, but says she is also highly influenced through traditional Buddhist Thangka style. In her latest works these influences are highly visible, but there is also a change in style to new elements, which leads to an own individual style.
In this paper I very much like to discuss the works of Nomin Bold and specific elements she’s using. A special focus will lie on the religious aspect, but I will also try to elaborate what it means to work as a woman with a Mongol Zurag style.
