The history of the press is a perfect lens that can explain the social struggles,
power relations, construction of identities and ideologies, the drawing of physical and mental boundaries in the course of modernization, and the historical evolution and perception of journalism. These developments were, for instance, profoundly shaped by the very rich Arabic press of the last period of the Ottoman Empire. With the end of the Ottoman Empire after the First World War, and with the emergence and construction of nationalist identities, the relations between the “two sides”, the Republic of Turkey and the Arab successor
states of the Ottoman Empire in the Eastern Mediterranean, developed in a framework of political and cultural “doubt”, a framework relevant until today. Particularly, together with the “Arab Spring”, since 2010, Turkey and the Arab World have once again found themselves in a powerful political and social interaction. Turkish-Arab relations are, for instance today, perceived in Turkey specifically from the perspective of politics and “Arab” refugees in Turkey. The present journal section on Arabic newspapers in the Ottoman period will therefore both illuminate the above-mentioned themes from a historical
perspective and shed light on the present.

Basın tarihi, toplumsal mücadeleleri, iktidar ilişkilerini, kimliklerin inşasını, ideolojilerin belirginleşmesini, modernleşme tarihinin fiziki ve zihinsel hudutlarının çizilmesini ve gazeteciliğin tarihsel evrimini ve algılanışını açıklayabilecek bir mercek. Örneğin, Osmanlı’nın son döneminde çok zengin bir Arapça basını gelişerek, yukarıda belirtilen gelişimleri derinden
şekillendirdi. Birinci Dünya Savaşı sonrasında Osmanlı Devleti’nin sona ermesiyle yaşanan milliyetçi kimliklerin belirlenmesi ve inşası sürecinde, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin ve Doğu Akdeniz’de Osmanlıdan doğan Arap devletlerinin “iki taraf” arasındaki ilişkileri, etkileri bugüne kadar yansıyan belli bir siyasi ve kültürel “kuşku” çerçevesinde şekillendi. “Arap Baharının” yankılarıyla, 2010’dan itibaren, Türkiye ve Arap Dünyası siyasi ve toplumsal zeminde tekrar güçlü bir etkileşim sürecine girmiş bulunuyor. Bugünlerde Türkiye’de, TürkArap ilişkileri özellikle siyasi ve Türkiye’de bulunan “Arap” mülteciler perspektifinden algılanıyor. Bu bağlamda, Osmanlı döneminde Arapça gazeteler dosyası, yukarıda değinilen temaları hem tarihsel perspektiften aydınlatacak hem bugüne de ışık tutacak.
