Collection and processing of data for global demographic estimates for prehistory - XRONOS & ESTER

Hinz, Martin (9 December 2022). Collection and processing of data for global demographic estimates for prehistory - XRONOS & ESTER (Unpublished). In: Environmental conditions in prehistory (c. 10,000 BP - present). Kiel. 9.12.2022.

In 2021, thanks to funding from the SNSF, the XRONOS database project began its work. The aim of this project is to provide a platform for the dissemination of absolute chronological data of various types. Currently, like many others and due to the good data basis, we have concentrated on 14C data. However, our ambitions go far beyond that: we also want to integrate typological, stratigraphical and above all dendrochronological data, which will happen in the next stage of development.
In this presentation, I can report on our experiences and plans, and also show how we intend to use this database, in addition to other data sources, in the context of a planned research project for a global population estimate. The method applied in this project is intended to explicitly deal with the problem of missing and heterogeneous data. For this purpose, we want to use Bayesian hierarchical models to connect different heterogeneous proxies and compensate for missing data between working regions by partial pooling. I am looking forward to opinions and suggestions.
