Who belongs to the independent theatre scene? What does independent mean? Sumatra Yeshiva asks these questions in the contecxt of the performances Zwei zu zwei , wich premiered at the Kaserne Basel. in this contemporary dance theatre, the sibling pairs Ralph and Norman Tharayil and Sumatra and Anjali Yeshiva take their own artistic practices, their experiences with the funding and education system in Switzerland and Germany and their growing up between Basel and souther India as a starting point to reflect on structural exclusions, attributions and epistemological premises in the performing arts. Based on the observation that the narrative about the independent scene is often canonized ass success story of institutional critique in German theatre studies, this essay discusses alongside this production how artists of color encounter the same exclusions as in the system in municipal theatre.
