In this paper I presented the main theoretical and methodological approaches within the SNF-financed project "Trajectories of Slavery in Islamicate Societies: Three Concepts from Islamic Legal Sources".
In particular I discussed the relevance of going beyond the dichotomy slavery/freedom introducing the importance of discussing trajectories of slavery, namely concepts that diversify our understanding of slavery in the Middle East.
